In June of 2001 my husband and I endowed a scholarship to Simon's Rock College, my alma mater. Many of our friends and family memebers have given generous gifts as well. We named the scholarship after Dorothy West, a favorite Harlem Renaissance writer. The endowment gives a disadvantaged student a full scholarship to attend the Young Writer's Workshop at Simon's Rock.

Dorothy West

I never met Dorothy West, but her work -- as the youngest member of the Harlem Renaissance -- influenced me greatly. The scholarship in her name enables a high school student to attend Simon's Rock's summer writing workshop, all expenses paid, every year. To read more about the program, please visit The Young Writer's Workshop page at the Simon's Rock website.

You Can Help

One of the ways you can support young writers today is by purchasing items from Amazon. For every one of my books purchased on Amazon, through this website, 15% of the price of your purchase will be donated to the scholarship fund. In order to purchase one of my books, click on any of the "Buy from" links you find after a book description. You don't have to buy my books to help this way: You can also support the scholarship fund simply by purchasing any item, new or used, by going to Amazon directly from my website and making a purchase -- CD, DVD, book, new or used. 5% of the price of any DVD and/or CD and 2.5% for each used item will be donated to the fund. In order for your purchases at Amazon to count toward The Dorothy West Scholarship Fund, you must initiate your visit to Amazon from

You can also send donations directly to the university:
